What Causes Acne And How To Wash Your Face Correctly
Here is the simple, no-nonsense guide to acne treatment that works (and will not break your bank either).
I cover how to deal with regular pimples (big or small) and blackheads. If you have deep cystic acne, please don't do anything to it and head to the doctor ASAP.
What Causes Acne
The answer to this question might require the entire book since it is not as clear and cut.
1) Acne can be caused by diet, but having a "clean" diet doesn't guarantee acne will go away.
2) Hormonal imbalances can cause acne; if you have those issues, you must optimize your hormones as soon as possible. But not all acne is hormonal.
3) Acne can be caused by lifestyle. Sweating a lot at work, in the gym, or anywhere else can cause acne if you have acne-prone skin. But some people with similar lifestyles have no acne.
Bottom line: It will take some time to figure out what exactly causes skin issues for you.
However, here I will cover the most effective ways to eliminate it on your face, not eliminate an underlying cause. This is beyond this article and might require medical attention.
1st Step: Wash Your Face Correctly (And With The Right Cleanser!)
For acne-prone skin, there are a few face washes you can use.
I wash my face once a day with an anti-acne cleanser and once with a regular cleanser. The rest of the time, I use water.
Please, don't use soap/shampoo/shower gel/whatever. It will dry your skin and cause more acne by ruining a natural skin barrier.
IMPORTANT. Wash your face with anti-acne wash immediately after sweating. This is the best time to use anti-acne wash.
There are a few types of acne cleansers you can use.
My personal favorite is Benzoyl Peroxide 10%.
It is probably the most effective, but 10% might be a bit too much if you are a new user.
Try 5% Differin Acne Face Wash first to make sure you can tolerate it.
Please remember that Benzoyl Peroxide will stain clothes, towels, and bed sheets! If you, for whatever reason, can't tolerate Benzoyl Peroxide (odds are you used it too much or left it on your face for too long), you can use Salicylic Acid face wash.
Washing your face correctly and consistently is the first step in acne control.
Here are a few examples of regular face washes I like. If you use anti-acne cleanser too much, it might dry your skin (which is not a good thing)
CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser is cheap, mild, and effective.
Innisfree Pore Clearing Facial Foam is MY FAVORITE non-acne cleanser. It is not just effective; it feels great to use. The best part is that this is a high-quality Korean product CHEAP! Have you seen the skin of a regular Korean guy or a girl? Exactly! I rest my case.
In the next article, I will tell you what exactly to get to treat acne and how to use it without burning your face.
DISCLAIMER (actually read it, please)
I am not a certified aesthetician, cosmetologist, or dermatologist. I am just a mid-thirties dude with acne issues for the last two decades. If you have a solution or treatment you are thinking of trying; odds are, I have already tried it for you. Except using toothpaste on your acne. Don't do it, it is stupid.
